Perverse Dependence: Gruesome forms of distorted libido

15/09/10  ||  The Duff

Okay, you take the moniker, the album title, the album cover (which is absolutely deplorable), the song titles, and you can guess we have a Cannibal Corpse/Disgorge-inspired band – so what’s new? Perverse Dependence hail from Russia of all places, and seem to have their brutal death metal nailed down to a very professional degree. Like, frighteningly good for a debut effort.

All the staples associated with the subgenre are present here – bass-heavy, dirty and dry production, exceptionally gifted, versatile and uncompromising drummer, tech guitar wizardry and bludgeoning, slow-paced Suffocation-like breakdowns for the new age, and low-end, indiscernible vocals. Maybe this will appear generic to some, and a year ago I’d be all about shearing some of my cock-love (basically herpes) with you in thinking such, but since discovering Defeated Sanity and giving originators Disgorge et al. more time as a result, I’ve gradually come around to admiring such a sub-genre as a gem of the underground scene.

That’s not to say that Perverse Dependence are an original outfit that separates itself from the pack; they know exactly which influences they wish to channel, and don’t deviate from the path. The album is on the short side, and it’s not for a lack of variation common in such a style of death metal that my discontented outlook is triggered – I feel the band took the “trim the fat” approach to the extreme, even if they possibly feel the need to impact the scene to a slow and steady scale; or maybe they just do the band thing for the fun of it and selected one of the most technically astounding subgenres to pursue.

Other downsides include the vocals, which are too guttural to comprehend, but in that oh so revolutionary way of putting absolutely zero effort into the performance for the sake of brutalizing the music; like Londoners with Dizzee Rascal, it’s tough to defend such a talentless display, and Victor isn’t even black to make us feel uplifted and… a little bit racist? God Bless You, London. Finally, in true Cannibal Corpse fashion, there are some needless clips inserted here-and-abouts, clips that make me think of the porn staff-member Inquisitor Generalis might pleasure himself to when drunk and feeling down on his luck.

All said, this is a very highly recommended effort for those who are ardent fans of the sub-genre, galvanizing their foreskin innards at the thought of what the future has in store within the land of blast-coated, gore-death/grind, and which band to follow-up on next – I mean, there is some seriously obscure music out there, most to be found in such a sub-genre alongside underground black metal. To the rest who wish to venture in drips and drabs (like myself), this still comes as one to be listened to; I’m on the fence as to a purchase (because, and I must re-iterate, the cover makes my heart ache baby-children’s tears), but there’s no doubt as to the talents of this ensemble for whom the future looks bright.
